Wednesday, 9.25am - PROTESTS against the possible closure of two Skegness post offices have been launched with the community and councils pulling together in the fight to save services.

MP for Boston and Skegness Mark Simmonds came to lend his support to the post masters of the Drummond Road and Seaview Road offices on Friday.

Councillors were out in force collecting signatures on a petition and members of the public came to fight for their community post offices.

Sub postmistress of the Drummond Road office Christine Throssell explained Post Office Ltd has been reducing services within sub-branches over the last few years.

She said: "The post office is the thing that keeps the community together. Its going to have a big impact on the businesses around here."

More than 2,500 signatures have already been collected on the petition at Seaview Road and councillors and dedicated members of the public are going door to door for support.

The petitions will be given to Mr Simmonds to take directly to Downing Street.

He said: "The potential closure of both these branches could have a very negative impact on both the communities they serve and also on visitors to Skegness because there's nothing to suggest the remaining post office in Skegness can cope with the volume of people who will be displaced if these close."

Many residents who live near the branches have voiced their concern to the Standard and to Skegness Town Council.

Town Mayor Coun Neil Pimperton has called a public meeting on August 12 at 7pm in the town hall to discuss the issue.

The post offices are on the latest list of proposed closures by Post Office in an attempt to reduce the network by 2,500 offices nationally.
