Tuesday, 4.44pm - A SYRIAN lorry driver swapped the Rock of Gibraltar for Gibraltar Point, Skegness, when his sat nav took him 1,600 miles in the wrong direction.

The poor man was supposed to be delivering goods to Gibraltar near Spain but his satellite navigation equipment brought him all the way from Turkey to Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve instead.

Assistant warden at the reserve David Miller helped the man to turn the huge lorry, which was thought to be transporting 4x4 vehicles, around for about an hour.

He said: "I can understand how it happened because his delivery docket said UK, so he would probably have known how to get to the UK and wouldn't have even turned the sat nav on until he was in England.
"I felt really sorry for him."

Mr Miller, the lorry driver and other helpers tried to turn the mammoth lorry, which some reports say weighed 32-tonnes, around in the first car park of the reserve but there was not enough room.

They valiantly tried to get it into the main car park where there is more room, but you have to drive over a large hump to get in.

After a lot of effort they eventually got the lorry over the hump, turned around and back over the hump so the driver could get on his way.

It is thought the confusion arose because the Rock of Gibraltar is considered part of the UK and would have been listed as such on sat nav equipment.
