Tuesday, 3.24pm - NEW Linx Housing Trust has urged local MPs Mark Simmonds and Sir Peter Tapsell to stop energy companies over-charging meter customers.
Trust director of operations Jack Whyman said: "People who use prepayment meters often have to pay more than other consumers for their electricty and it is simply not fair."

Many tenants of the housing trust are on low incomes and use prepayment meters for their power, but people using this system can pay up to £300 a year more than other customers who can shop around for online deals.

The trust revealed they can also pay up to £90 more for their gas and electricity than quarterly-billed households.

The trust said the Government has urged energy suppliers to give Britain's five million prepayment customers a fairer deal, but says nothing has yet happened.

Now hundreds of housing associations across the country are urging their MPs to ask the Government to take action. This nationwide campaign has been organised by the National Housing Federation.

The federation revealed 14 per cent of gas prepayment customers and nine per cent of electricity prepayment customers have disconnected themselves over the last year because they cannot afford it.
